Interning at KODE Labs is all about delivering the wow and delivering it fast. The work environment that everyone creates at KODE is collaborative, where ideas are thrown left and right. But they don’t just remain ideas. At KODE, execution is worshiped!
Just like how we aim to make the buildings of the world autonomous, the same goes for our interns. We aim to mentor them to the point where they are true owners.
We wanted to be honest with each other and learn about our interns’ experience with KODE. What surprised them? What challenged them the most? And what advice do they have for our future interns? Let’s hear in their own words what it is like to be a KODEr and let their answers speak for themselves.
Interns were most surprised by the speed, autonomy, and trust they experienced at KODE from the start. For many, it defied the typical “intern stereotype.” Instead of shadowing or doing low-impact work, we give interns real ownership, empower them to make decisions, and encourage them to problem-solve in their own way.
“I’ve never had so much decision-making ability so early into a position… It’s been a breath of fresh air to work somewhere that encourages outcome-driven processes.” — Dylan Shefman, Junior Project Manager (Former Intern) at KODE Labs
Many interns noted how surprising (and rewarding) it was to be led with significant tasks early on. Whether it was launching a feature, working on high-stakes audits, or developing dashboards, they were not bystanders but contributors. From coding features that improve platform performance to diagnosing HVAC issues in spaces, the experiences were practical, purpose-driven, and often personal.
“I am currently working on a feature that allows exporting CSV data… I have had to focus on making the solution scalable, reusable, and high-performing, and it has taught me a lot about design and code patterns.” — Adea Gerguri, Junior Software Engineer (Former Intern) at KODE Labs
The pace of execution also left an impression: ideas became working solutions almost overnight, reinforcing KODE’s identity as a company that acts as fast as it thinks, an intern said. Another standout was the collaborative and supportive team environment. In particular, team members were quick to help, and knowledge sharing was the norm.
“The fact that how aware everyone is about the projects and willing to offer help” — Kishor Ravindra Rao, Data Analyst Intern at KODE Labs
In short, interns felt like valued contributors in a no-hand-holding, no-red-tape environment that still cared deeply about mentorship and growth.
The common thread across all responses is the desire to do meaningful work in an environment that values innovation and immediate results. For some, there was the chance to make real contributions from day one. While others came for the opportunity to build scalable solutions, apply real-time data, and see how technology could create real-world change.
Dylan, on the other hand, joined to escape slow-moving public systems and be part of a team that builds scalable, data-driven solutions with real-world consequences.
“In a month of working at KODE, the company had done more to empower informed decision-making on a controversial topic than I had seen in years from working in, and being adjacent to, the public sector.” — Dylan Shefman, Junior Project Manager (Former Intern) at KODE Labs
KODE’s culture of learning and curiosity drew in even those unfamiliar with the ins and outs of smart buildings.
“The team culture made it easy to learn quickly.” — Drin Krasniqi, Frontend Intern at KODE Labs
At KODE, “doing more with less” meant making every hour, tool, and idea count.
“Everybody wants to see you succeed.” — Kishor Ravindra Rao, Data Analyst Intern at KODE Labs
Interns described a culture where speed meets structure. A place where everyone knows their role, yet still takes the time to support one another. Where people work independently, yet always with a shared sense of direction and a willingness to move forward, together.
Interns appreciated that deep thinking is encouraged and that “the way things are done” is always open to challenge. There’s also a clear drive for continuous growth, where ideas move fast and no one is left behind. KODE’s culture, in their words, is about creating an environment where everyone is expected to lead and contribute.
We asked interns to describe their interning at KODE experience in just one word. Words like “Refreshing”, “Challenging,” “Rewarding,” and “Inspiring” came up, showing how much growth took place in a short time.
But one word came up more than once: “Insightful.”
“It reflects the focused environment, the amount of learning, and the professional growth gained throughout the experience.” — Melisa Kololli, Frontend Intern at KODE Labs
Above all, these answers spoke for themselves.
The advice from all interns was clear: ask questions!
KODE, as a fast-paced environment full of opportunity for interns, emphasized that growth comes from both listening and contributing. While you’re expected to take ownership of your work, you’re never alone. The support is there, you just have to speak up.
“Always ask questions, especially when and if you don’t understand something. Your co-workers are always open to helping you out.” — Edisa Shabanaj, Junior Accountant (Former Intern) at KODE Labs
Whether it’s diving into documentation, exploring unfamiliar parts of the platform, or getting to know new teammates, success at KODE is about being proactive, open, and unafraid to step outside your comfort zone.
